Previous Major Requirements

Subject to university regulations, students who entered UTK before the fall 2014 semester may choose to abide by previous major requirements. These requirements are as follows:

The Political Science Major (before fall 2014)

The Political Science (POLS) Major consists of twenty-four (24) hours of political science course credit beyond the two major prerequisite courses, Political Science 101 (or Political Science 107, the honors version of Political Science 101), and Political Science 102.
All majors must take Political Science 101 (or Political Science 107, the honors version of Political Science 101), and Political Science 102. Here are the requirements beyond these courses:

  1. Each POLS major must earn twenty-four (24) hours of upper-division political science course credit, including at least one class from each of the following four (4) lists.
    1. United States Government and Politics/Public Administration: POLS 311, POLS 312, POLS 315, POLS 320, POLS 321, POLS 330, POLS 340, POLS 341, POLS 401, POLS 410, POLS 411, POLS 412, POLS 420, POLS 421, POLS 425, POLS 430, POLS 431, POLS 435, POLS 440, POLS 441, POLS 442, and POLS 445
    2. Comparative Government and Politics: POLS 350, POLS 361, POLS 364, POLS 451, POLS 452, POLS 454, POLS 456, POLS 459, POLS 461, and POLS 463
    3. International Relations: POLS 365, POLS 366, POLS 370, POLS 470, POLS 471, POLS 473, and POLS 474
    4. Political Theory: POLS 300, POLS 374, POLS 475, and POLS 476

Note: (1) At least nine (9) hours in the major must be earned at UTK.

The Political Science Major with a Concentration in Public Administration (before fall 2014)

The Political Science (POLS) Major with a Concentration in Public Administration (henceforth PAC) consists of twenty-seven (27) hours of political science course credit beyond the three major prerequisite courses, Political Science 101 (or Political Science 107, the honors version of Political Science 101), Political Science 102, and Political Science 201.

All majors must take Political Science 101 (or Political Science 107, the honors version of Political Science 101), Political Science 102, and Economics 201. Here are the requirements beyond these courses:

  1. Each PAC major must take four (4) of the following courses:
    ECON 471, ECON 472, POLS 340, POLS 401, POLS 440, POLS 441, POLS 442.
  2. Each PAC major must take one (1) of the following comparative government and politics courses:
    POLS 350, POLS 361, POLS 364, POLS 451, POLS 452, POLS 454, POLS 456, POLS 459, POLS 461, and POLS 463
  3. Each PAC major must take one (1) of the following international relations courses:
    POLS 365, POLS 366, POLS 370, POLS 470, POLS 471, POLS 473, and POLS 474
  4. Each PAC major must take one (1) of the following political theory courses:
    POLS 300, POLS 374, POLS 475, and POLS 476
  5. Each PAC major must take one (1) of the following American government and politics/Public Administration courses:
    POLS 311, POLS 312, POLS 315, POLS 320, POLS 321, POLS 330, POLS 340, POLS 341, POLS 401, POLS 410, POLS 411, POLS 412, POLS 420, POLS 421, POLS 425, POLS 430, POLS 431, POLS 435, POLS 440, POLS 441, POLS 442, and POLS 445
  6. Each PACS major must take three (3) additional hours of upper-division political science course credit.

The Political Science Major with an Honors concentration (before fall 2014)

The Political Science Major with an Honors Concentration (HC) consists of twenty-seven (27) hours of political science course credit beyond the two major prerequisite courses, Political Science 101 (or Political Science 107, the honors version of Political Science 101), Political Science 102.
All HC majors must take Political Science 101 (or Political Science 107, the honors version of Political Science 101), Political Science 102, and Economics 201. Here are the requirements beyond these courses:

  1. Each HC major must take one (1) of the following American government and politics/Public Administration courses:
    POLS 311, POLS 312, POLS 315, POLS 320, POLS 321, POLS 330, POLS 340, POLS 341, POLS 401, POLS 410, POLS 411, POLS 412, POLS 420, POLS 421, POLS 425, POLS 430, POLS 431, POLS 435, POLS 440, POLS 441, POLS 442, and POLS 445
  2. Each HC major must take one (1) of the following comparative government and politics courses:
    POLS 350, POLS 361, POLS 364, POLS 451, POLS 452, POLS 454, POLS 456, POLS 459, POLS 461, and POLS 463
  3. Each HC major must take one (1) of the following international relations courses:
    POLS 365, POLS 366, POLS 370, POLS 470, POLS 471, POLS 473, and POLS 474
  4. Each HC major must take one (1) of the following political theory courses:
    POLS 300, POLS 374, POLS 475, and POLS 476
  5. Each HC major must take both of the following Honors Thesis and Seminar courses:       
    POLS 487, POLS 488
  6. Each HC major must take: POLS 401
  7. Each HC major must take six (6) additional hours of upper-division political science course credit.
