ET- ASPA and UT-ICMA Host Public Service Career Building Workshop

March 8, 2017, MPPA students attended a Public Service Career Building Workshop at the Howard Baker Center for Public Policy that focused on how to conduct a successful job search. Experienced experts form a variety of agencies discussed the skills that public service employers look for in potential candidates, offered advice for preparing resumes and cover letters, and reviewed appropriate interview protocol and tips for a successful interview. Speakers included Margaret Norris and Steve Thompson from MTAS; Chris Caldwell, Finance Director of Knox County; Mark Watson, City Manager of Oak Ridge; Perry Benshoof, Knox County Comptroller, and Shawna Hembree from UT Career Services. The moderator-led discussion allowed students to ask questions about interview questions, credit and social media monitoring, inquiries about compensation/benefits, and how to obtain positions in local, state, and federal service.
