Nownes Receives Betty Lynn Hendrickson Professorship

Anthony Nownes, professor in the UT Department of Political Science, received the Betty Lynn Hendrickson Professorship for 2025-2027. Nownes, who joined the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 2008, focuses his teaching and research on American politics.
A distinguished scholar in American political culture and public policy, Nownes has conducted extensive research on interest groups and lobbying throughout his career. His book, Total Lobbying: What Lobbyists Want (and How They Try to Get It), was published in 2006. He has co-authored six research articles published since 2024, each looking at important aspects of American politics including interest group coalitions, celebrity endorsement in politics, and lobbying in the states. Nownes is currently working on multiple projects, one involving analyzing how lobbyists factor into the government procurement process.
Nownes earned an Associate of Arts degree from Moorpark College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, before completing his PhD at the University of Kansas in 1993.
Established by the College of Arts and Sciences in 2023, the Beth Lynn Hendrickson Professorship is awarded to faculty who excel in their research field and teaching of the social sciences. This professorship will support Nowne’s continued pursuit of meaningful research, helping him contribute to how we understand the role of lobbyists and interest groups in politics.
