Dr. Cunningham received the A.B. degree from Erskine College and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. He joined the UT faculty in 1972. He retired from full-time service at the end of the 2008-09 academic year.

Professor Cunningham has studied, taught, and published on Organization Behavior and Leadership in the US and the Middle East. From 1959-62, Professor Cunningham taught at Aleppo College in Aleppo, Syria. He returned to the Middle East in 1986 as a participant in the faculty exchange program at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan, and again in 1992 as a Fulbright Teacher/Scholar at Yarmouk University. He has also conducted research in Marrakech, Morocco.

Professor Cunningham authored The Bank and the Bureau: Organizational Development in the Middle East (1988), Wasta: The Hidden Force in Middle East Society (1993), Agendas And Decisions:  How State Government Executives And Middle Managers Make And Administer Policy (2008), and Experiencing Service-Learning (2011). In addition, he has published more than 30 research articles.

Professor Cunningham gives generously of his time in sharing his academic expertise with the community through academic outreach and volunteers his time to several non-profit groups. His extraordinary contributions to public service were acknowledged with the Faculty Public Service Award presented to him by the College of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
