Students Shine at TN Intercollegiate Legislature
Last November, a University of Tennessee, Knoxville, delegation attended the 55th Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature (TISL) General Assembly. TISL is an annual gathering of college students from across the state focused on civic education through the simulation of Tennessee’s legislative and judicial processes.
This year UT’s delegation included 11 legislators, two lobbyists, and three moot court lawyers. Not only did the delegation members walk away with a greater understanding of Tennessee’s government, but they also walked away with several awards.
UT’s moot court team placed third overall. The legislators were also extremely successful, winning best house delegation. In addition to the delegation award, two legislators—political science majors Ashley Watermeier and Walker Kinsler—won individual awards for Best Bill and Best Researched Bill, respectively. Another delegate, political science major Will Bowen, was elected speaker of the house and will serve on the TISL executive board for the upcoming year.
In addition to participating in legislative sessions, several delegation members worked together to create the Women and Gender Minorities Caucus, which will continue to advocate for legislation promoting gender equality throughout future TISL General Assemblies.
UT students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn, form new connections, and engage with Tennessee officials, including Secretary of State Tre Hargett.
